The Steel Tongue Drum was invented by Dennis Havlena, who created the first Steel Tongue Drum from an empty propane tank in 2007. Because of this first version of the Steel Tongue Drum, it is also called Tank Drum.

Therefore, Steel Tongue Drums are hollow bodies composed of two dome-like shapes. The top side has incised slots surrounding different sizes of tongues which generates several notes, the count of which differs in between the models of Steel Tongue Drums.

      INSTRUMENTS FOR EVERYBODY

It doesn’t matter if you are a teacher, a sound therapist or simply a music lover, the Steel Tongue Drum can be played regardless of age or previous musical experience. You don’t have to be able to read music to play the Steel Tongue Drum, because the tones are chosen to fit together.

To make the steel tongues vibrate and thus elicit a sound, the steel tongues are struck with the fingers or a mallet. If you want to create meditative sounds, simply strike the tongues quickly and briefly with your fingers.
